Who we are
As a private, nonprofit corporate foundation created in 1979, we are an integral part of Popular’s social mission since its foundation. At the time, Rafael Carrión, Jr., recognized the need to create a philanthropic structure so that the company would have participation in the search for solutions to our society’s urgent problems.
Today at the FBP we believe in the transformative power of education and the dignified development of our communities. We support initiatives that respond to the educational, cultural and community needs of our children and youngsters. This contribution is part of our responsible investment in the future of the communities in which we are involved.
We add to our economic investment the active participation of our employees in solving problems we cannot ignore. Popular employees join hands to contribute to the social work of the foundation through financial contributions and volunteer work.
Our social work
Is done through a series of programs aimed at educating children and youngsters, and the integral development of individuals and communities. We have a grant-making program to nonprofit organizations, special projects such as the Academic Excellence Award, alliances with other related organizations such as Revive la Música with the Fundación Luis A. Ferré, and a volunteer program made up by Popular employees.
In our more than 32 years of social work, a total of $23 million have been invested. The grants program has supported 253 organizations located throughout Puerto Rico that have impacted the lives of thousands.
During 2009, a total of 88,257 people were directly impacted by projects supported by the Fundación Banco Popular, through an investment in donations of $ 1.8 million. As a result, school teachers received professional training, students who dropped-out school continued their studies in alternative schools, and members of disadvantaged communities received job training, among others.
